GMS Expands Rugged Display Family with 12-Inch Sunlight-Readable, NVIS-Compatible Smart Display

Ultra-bright 1800-nit cockpit display with on-board quad-core processing subsystem, glove-ready touch, and wide off-angle viewing for both day and night operations joins SmartView™ line.

WASHINGTON, D.C., October 12, 2026: General Micro Systems (GMS), a leader in ultra-rugged embedded computing for defense and aerospace, today unveiled the newest addition to its line of rugged, defense-spec, off-the-shelf displays. The HD12WL is a high-definition12-inch, avionics/vetronics-ready smart cockpit display with a complete, high-performance on-board embedded processing subsystem. Engineered for 24/7 tactical operations, the display delivers 1,800 nits of brightness for sunlight readability and wide viewing angles for off-axis daylight use, along with full NVIS (Night Vision Imaging System) compatibility for operations with night vision goggles. The onboard embedded system alleviates the need for a separate mission computer, saving overall size, weight and power (SWaP).

Operator consoles are the lifeblood of smart, connected defense systems, but the displays must live in the same punishing environment as the operators and the platforms they serve, whether rotary wing, fixed wing, ground vehicle, or surface ship. Despite the inherently fragile nature of modern LCD glass, the display must survive the rigors of battle. As a long-standing supplier of ultra-rugged displays for avionics, shipboard and ground vehicle systems, GMS built the HD12WL to meet that challenge.

“The HD12WL is the most formidable mission display of its class ever brought to the battlefield,” said Ben Sharfi, CEO and chief architect, GMS. “With an astonishing 1,800 nits of sunlight-overpowering brightness, it delivers exceptional clarity where other displays fail. Crews can view it from virtually any angle in harsh daylight or under night vision goggles and see the same crisp, uncompromising image, every time. Built to shrug off punishing 100g shock, the HD12WL keeps operating when mission success depends on it most. But calling it a display barely scratches the surface. This is a fully integrated mission computer, a tactical command node, and the ultimate visual lifeline for pilots and vehicle operators. In terms of visibility, durability, and computing capability, it stands alone. Nothing in the air, on the ground, or anywhere in between comes close.”

Built for daylight, crowded cockpits, and multi-operator missions

Off-angle viewing from -85 degrees to +85 degrees lets multiple operators work from various positions, while GMS “boot kick” protector glass and anti-reflective/anti-glare screen treatments cut washout in direct sunlight. For night operations, a separate NVIS LED backlight and 34 finely controlled illumination increments let crews match brightness precisely to cabin or panel lighting or night-vision use. Zeroize sanitization de-classifies the whole system and extensive built-in test makes the display reliable and ready to deploy.

HD12WL highlights:

  • 12-inch HD (1280 x 800) display offers crisp and accurate visual information weighing under 10 pounds
  • Quad-core processor with integral graphics processor and separate LCD controller processor combines display and mission computer/graphics engine into an all-in-one that saves SWaP
  • Embedded subsystem includes DVI, dual 1Gig Ethernet, GPIO and dual USB I/O, alleviating need for breakout box or cumbersome cables
  • 5-wire resistive touchscreen is designed for gloves without sacrificing tactile position accuracy, plus retained stylus pointer for finer touch
  • NVIS compatibility works with goggles or image enhancers and provides exceptionally fine-grained brightness control for comfortable use
  • External auxiliary video input and programmable picture-in-picture on-screen display allows dual images or real-time health monitoring of display, mission computer or other external input(s)
  • Built-in self-test at power-on and operator-initiated verifies accurate system operation
  • User-programmable bezel buttons for in-system or external control of USB or GPIO devices
  • Zeroize SecureDNA® sanitization declassifies the system via operator control or under OS decision tree(s)
  • Optional fan assembly for non-cold plate mounting, and alternative cable mount locations to fit any system design

GMS family of rugged displays

All GMS displays are available as passive RuggedView™ models or as SmartView™ models with a complete embedded computing subsystem. Integrating processing and I/O into the display saves weight and eliminates auxiliary chassis or modules elsewhere in the system. In addition to the HD12WL, GMS’ family of rugged displays include:

  • Passive RuggedView displays: 10 to 24 inches, in standard-definition (SD10 to SD24) and high-definition (HD10 to HD24)
  • SmartView™ displays: HD10 to HD24 with embedded processing subsystems, including I/O or network switching
  • Rugged Thunderbolt™ 4 Display: Part of the GMS X9 Spider architecture, this display connects to an X9 system over the open MOSA Thunderbolt 4 interface. It extends the X9 processor system into the display and lets I/O modules be added directly in the display itself for design convenience
  • Smart Rugged Thunderbolt 4 Display/Tablet embeds an X9 Mission Processor system into the display while extending the X9 Architecture over Thunderbolt 4

The GMS exceptionally rugged NVIS compatible displays are all conduction cooled with no required fans, with back-side cooling directing heat away from the operator. They also have thin profile that supports surface, panel or recessed mounting to save cabinet depth and are touchscreen enabled with resistive wire for gloved operations or PCAP (capacitive). Other features include:

  • Programmable dim/bright in finely grained increments to meet operational requirements such as cabin or panel lighting
  • Tested to meet military specifications, including vehicle and aircraft power (MIL-STD-1275), environmental (MIL-STD-810), EMI (MIL-STD-461), and NVIS (MIL-STD-309).
  • Customizable features for platform-specific operation
