The Mustang is an 8- to 18-core dual Xeon® E5 server intended for military/defense/aerospace with greatest SWaP-Efficiency (SWaP-E) on the market due to its compact size and robust computing and I/O performance. Mustang is an ideal forwardly-deployed vehicle-mounted battlefield/airborne/shipboard server that offers greatest reliability in the smallest packaging. Mustang can also be used in industrial and commercial platforms since it has server-class performance, significant networking options, exceptional I/O capabilities and removable storage. It can be mounted virtually anywhere—including on telephone poles and powered by solar panels to form an outside surveillance server or Internet-of-Things (IoT) intelligent gateway. The S402-LC is fully compliant to MIL-STD-810G, MIL-STD-1275D, MIL-S-901D, DO-160D, MIL-STD-461E and has ingress protection up to IP66. This system may also be ordered from the factory with operating systems such as Windows® or Linux® pre-installed.

General Description

The S402-LC "Mustang" is a third-generation, fully rugged, low cost dual socket Intel® Xeon® E5 server. It is designed to provide the highest level of server-class performance possible in a fully ruggedized, conduction-cooled system, operating up to -40°C to +85°C. Mustang simplifies local data processing tasks that require an ultra-fast, multi-CPU server with vast amounts of high-speed, ECC-protected RAM and storage in one ultra-rugged chassis. S402-LC is ideal for the application that requires the horsepower of a high-performance server, but doesn’t require the expensive MIL-Circular high-speed interfaces.
The S402-LC supports up to 18 physical CPU cores per socket with Hyper-Threading for a total of up to 72 logical cores, each operating up to 2.1GHz with ability to Turbo Boost up to 3.30GHz. To harvest this incredible CPU performance, the CPU is coupled with up to 1TB of DDR4 RAM organized in four banks per processor. Each RAM bank consists of four DDR4 DIMM arrays with Error Correcting Code (ECC). The ECC RAM provides 2-bit error detection with 1-bit correction and up to 2133 Mega Transfers per Second (MTS) between CPU and memory.

I/O Subsystem

The I/O subsystem for the Mustang is designed to support an array of high-speed I/O devices with modularity and security. The Mustang I/O sub-system supports four USB 2.0 ports, three Gigabit Ethernet ports, two Serial ports with RS-232/422/485 buffers, one VGA port via MXM site, full HD-Audio, and eight General Purpose I/O lines. Mustang also supports an optional Baseboard Management Controller (BMC) for detailed system health monitoring and reporting using industry standard IPMI 2.0 via a COM port. The BMC is queried and configured via an integral web server and accessed via a browser or the COM port.


For applications requiring high-performance video output, the S402-LC provides an optional MXM video module, utilizing the most powerful NVIDIA®- and AMD®-based GPUs. AMD® Radeon™ embedded GPU E8860 provides up to 768 GFLOPS and NVIDIA™ embedded GPU M2000M provides up to 1.32 TFLOPS. Video output is accessed through an optional two SMPTE 292M SDI mini-BNC ports.


Mustang also offers the most secure storage subsystem possible. It supports 16MB BIOS Flash with hardware-write protect and secure erase. The onboard fixed M.2 boot device and dual fixed 2.5” SATA or NVMe SSDs drive provide optional hardware write-protect, Secure Erase and encryption functions. The S402-LC can optionally support FIPS-140-2 and FIPS-197 encryption standards for ultra-secure data storage. These data security functions, along with the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) 2.0 and Intel’s Trusted Execution Technology (TXT), make the Mustang the smallest and most secure system on the market.

Technology Used

The Mustang utilizes two of the latest Intel® Xeon® E5-26xx v4 CPUs, which is Intel’s most powerful processor series. Xeon® E5 processors are the gold standard for server-class computing and data management, boasting up to 18 cores/36 threads per socket with advanced thermal management to control heat under load. The Xeon® E5 supports 35MB of Smart Cache shared among the cores. The processor clocks up to 2.4GHz per core (14-core version) with Turbo Boosting up to 3.3GHz (18-core version). On Tiger, the Xeon® E5 CPU also supports 1TB of DDR4 RAM with ECC. This Xeon® processor is considered the most powerful per-watt server class processor on the market, with many added power-saving features. It also boasts RAS features like PCIe hot-plug and CMCI, Intel Demand Based Switching, Intel® SpeedStep Technology, to name a few. Xeon® also contains security functions such as Intel’s second-generation Virtualization Technology VT-x, VT-x with Extended Page Tables (EPT), VT-D for Directed I/O and Trusted Execution Technology (TXT). The Xeon® E5 platform supports PCI Express Gen 3, USB 3.0 and SATA 3 for the highest performance possible on a server platform.


The Mustang is equipped with GMS’s patent-pending RuggedCool™ technology, the industry’s most unique conduction cooling system promising system operation over -40°C to +85°C. RuggedCool™ provides the lowest thermal resistance to the case, keeping the CPU within temperature limits at full load, while still providing the highest shock specifications known in the industry. The S402-LC is a stand-alone, fan-less system and should be mounted directly to a metal cold plate surface that provides a reliable conductive thermal path.
