The Tiger is an 8- to 18-core Xeon® E5 server with integrated intelligent Layer 2/3 switch intended for military/defense/aerospace with greatest SWaP-Efficiency (SWaP-E) on the market due to its compact size and robust computing and I/O performance. Tiger accepts multiple inputs, and can output data via multiple ports, including providing several types of video ports. With the onboard 26-port managed switch, Tiger is an ideal forwardly-deployed vehicle-mounted battlefield/airborne/shipboard server that offers greatest reliability in the smallest packaging. Tiger can also be used in industrial and commercial platforms since it has server-class performance, significant networking options, exceptional I/O capabilities and removable storage.
It can be mounted virtually anywhere—including on telephone poles and powered by solar panels to form an outside surveillance server or Internet-of-Things (IoT) Intelligent Gateway. The S402-SW is fully compliant to MIL-STD-810G, MIL-STD-1275D, MIL-S-901D, DO-160D, MIL-STD-461E and has ingress protection up to IP66. This system may also be ordered from the factory with operating systems such as Windows® or Linux® pre-installed.

General Description

The S402-SW "Tiger" is a third-generation, fully rugged dual socked Intel® Xeon® E5 v4 server with an integrated 26 port intelligent Layer 2/Layer 3 enterprise Ethernet switch. It is designed to provide data center switch functions with the highest level of server-class performance possible in a fully ruggedized, conduction-cooled system, operating up to -40°C to +85°C. Tiger utilizes individual MIL circular locking connectors for each Ethernet port thus providing the ultimate rugged interconnect with maximum flexibility. Tiger is targeted for applications where two ultra-fast, multi-core server-class CPUs are needed with vast amounts of high-speed, ECC-protected RAM controlling 24 Gigabit Ethernet devices with packet snooping and switching functions with customizable rules.
The S402-SW supports up to 18 physical CPU cores per socket with Hyper-Threading for a total of up to 72 logical cores, each operating up to 2.1GHz with ability to Turbo Boost up to 3.30GHz. To harvest this incredible CPU performance, the CPU is coupled with up to 1TB of DDR4 RAM organized in four banks per processor. Each RAM bank consists of four DDR4 DIMM arrays with Error Correcting Code (ECC). The ECC RAM provides 2-bit error detection with 1-bit correction and up to 2133 Mega Transfers per Second (MTS) between CPU and memory.

I/O Subsystem

The Tiger consists of a host CPU module and a Switch module, with most of the I/O associated with the CPU module. The I/O subsystem for the Tiger is designed to support the widest array of high-speed I/O devices with modularity and security. The Host CPU supports two 10 Gigabit Ethernet ports where one is connected to the Switch and is available to provide CPU intervention and intra-system transfers, while the second port is controlled by the switch and available to the user on the high-speed connector. Additional I/O included are four USB 2.0 ports, three Gigabit Ethernet ports with TCP/IP offloading, two Serial ports with RS-232/422/485 buffers, One VGA port, full HD-Audio, and eight General Purpose I/O lines. Tiger supports an optional Baseboard Management Controller (BMC) for detailed system health monitoring and reporting using industry standard IPMI 2.0 via a COM port. The BMC is queried and configured via an integral web server and accessed via a browser or the COM port.


For applications requiring high-performance video output, the S402-SW provides an optional MXM video module, utilizing the most powerful NVIDIA®- and AMD®-based GPUs. AMD® Radeon™ embedded GPU E8860 provides up to 768 GFLOPS and NVIDIA™ embedded GPU M2000M provides up to 1.32 TFLOPS. Video output is accessed through three DisplayPort/HDMI interfaces and an optional two SMPTE 292M SDI ports.

Ethernet Switch

The switch functions are controlled via a 416MHz MIPS CPU with 128MB of DRAM. The MIPS processor controls 24 Gigabit Ethernet ports and two 10Gigabit Ethernet ports. One of the 10Gigabit Ethernet ports is connected directly to the host CPU but MUXed to an external connector, while the other port is controlled directly by the switch and accessible on an external connector. The Tiger supports fully managed Layer 2 and Layer 3 functions, such as VLAN and QoS processing, enabling the delivery of differentiated services, security through intelligent frame processing, and egress frame manipulation. The Tiger may be configured via the host CPU USB/COM port which is connected internally or via a Gigabit Ethernet port on the rear panel.


Tiger also offers the most secure storage subsystem possible. It supports 16 MB BIOS Flash with hardware-write protect and secure erase. The onboard optional M.2 boot device and removable canister with 4x 2.5” SATA or 4x NVMe SSDs provides optional hardware write-protect, Secure Erase and encryption functions. An additional SD card reader is available in the canister bay and used as Personal Profile Module™ (PPM) via SD card authentication for designated user access. The S402-SW can optionally support FIPS-140-2 and FIPS-197 encryption standards for ultra-secure data storage. These data security functions, along with the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) 2.0 and Intel®’s Trusted Execution Technology (TXT), make the Tiger the smallest and most secure multi-CPU server with multi-port switch on the market.

Technology Used

The Tiger utilizes two of the latest Intel® Xeon® Xeon E5-26xx v4 CPUs, which is Intel’s most powerful server processor series. Xeon® E5 processors are the gold standard for server-class computing and data management, boasting up to 18 cores/36 threads per socket with advanced thermal management to control heat under load. The Xeon® E5 supports 35MB of Smart Cache shared among the cores. The processor clocks up to 2.4GHz per core (14-core version) with Turbo Boosting up to 3.3GHz (18-core version). On Tiger, the Xeon® E5 CPU also supports 1TB of DDR4 RAM with ECC.
This Xeon® processor is considered the most powerful per-watt server class processor on the market, with many added power-saving features. It also boasts RAS features like PCIe hot-plug and CMCI, Intel® Demand Based Switching, Intel® SpeedStep Technology, to name a few. Xeon® also contains security functions such as Intel’s second-generation Virtualization Technology VT-x, VT-x with Extended Page Tables (EPT), VT-D for Directed I/O and Trusted Execution Technology (TXT). The Xeon® E5 platform supports PCI Express Gen 3, USB 3.0 and SATA 3 for the highest performance possible on a server platform.


The Tiger is is equipped with GMS’s patent-pending RuggedCool™ technology, the industry’s most unique conduction cooling system promising system operation over -40°C to +85°C. RuggedCool™ provides the lowest thermal resistance to the case, keeping the CPU within temperature limits at full load, while still providing the highest shock specifications known in the industry. The S402-SW is a stand-alone, fan-less system and should be mounted directly to a metal cold plate surface that provides a reliable conductive thermal path.
